columns per row

Having followed the discussion about the questionnarie application and the ensuing difficulty of correctly assessing the number of columns possiblwe in a row, might i suggest ignoring that problem and approach the questionnaire problem differently. What's wrong with a row per answer including a questionnarie identifier, respondent identifier,question number and response in each row? Simple analysis should be fairly easy with SQL tools and passing the data to more sophisticated item analysis and statistics probably requires a reformat anyway.
