Jack, This is basically a problem with Unix not Informix. My understanding is that Kill -9 is an interrupt that is untrappable by the program. Basically the O/S sees the interrupt and zaps the program. Result engine dies without clearing up its mess result corrupted Online engine, data, indexes, shared memory and no way out except recovery from your last backup!!!! Everybody has this problem. This is not a good idea. Informix can sometimes help recover your engine which they do somewhat cautiously and remotely. The techniques used to do this are not on general release because they are dangerous to Online engine health and the best solution is not to get in the mess!! You have a number of solutions. 1) Go to a trusted/secure unix implementation and take the performance hit and hassle. 2) Train the people involved never to do a kill -9. Ha! Ha! Ha! 3) Protect the kill command as you suggest above!! If they let you! 4) Put everything in menus and forget the word unix :-) 5) Jump off a cliff. :-)) 6) Pray (Any deity, it doesn't really matter - They won't help) :-))) Cheers - Jim My opinions are my own.
