Oracle/Informix/Sybase SQL Array Support?
Posted in 1995
We are working on an application with lots of time series data, and spacially arrayed data. Of course, the natural way to represent these is as arrays. This is a fairly demanding application, in that we have up to 500 5 float measurement packets coming in each second, that we need to update into existing rows in a database, while concurrent processes read the data, generate reports, and graphs, etc. It appears that Oracle has good SQL support for moving batches of data in and out of a database, using their array UPDATE, INSERT, and FETCH capabilites. It appears that Informix does not have this support in their SQL, (except maybe inserts?). Does Sybase? Is it an important efficiency feature, or can it be simulated with PREPARES? Simple minded approaches, (i.e. UPDATE each row one at a time, and commit every 100), have failed to provide the needed performance so far, (on a Sparc 10 running Oracle 7 we could only update about 300 rows per second). So, we are looking at using rowid, batch updates, etc. What are the strengths and weaknesses of the big 3 in this area? Thanks, Don Don Erway derway@ndc.com NDC Systems 818-358-1871 730 E.
