179: ISAM error: no free disk space for sort

When running update statistics on any column that's part of an index e.g.
update statistics high for table detlog(genno); on a table of 33 million
rows, under AIX 5 IDS 7.31.UD4, I experience the error 179: ISAM error: nofree disk space for sort.
This machine is a P series RS6000, has 2Gb of physical memory and about 1Gb
of temporary dbspace used for sorts, but still the error persists.
I have read in the PDQ section of the 7.31 admin guide the following:
Update StatisticsThe SQL UPDATE STATISTICS statement, which is not processed in parallel, is
affected by PDQ because it must allocate the memory used for sorting. Thus
the behavior of the UPDATE STATISTICS statement is affected by the memory
management associated with PDQ. Even though the UPDATE STATISTICS statement
is not processed in parallel, the database server must allocate the memory
that this statement uses for sorting.
I have therefore set DS_TOTAL_MEMORY 500000 but this hasn't made any
difference and the error persists.
Any clues to where I may be going wrong? Is the allocation of memory for
sorting by a different token with onconfig?
Increase
the size of your tempdbs space by adding to a current space, for these sorts
will not span multiple tempdbs spaces. When I was doing SAP work, it was not
uncommon for me to have multiple 10 GB tempdbs spaces, due to the large sorts
that took place from time to time.
Also, you didn't mention the use of the PSORT_NPROCS environment parameter.
This parameter, set before you bring up the engine, will apply to all sorts
untaken by the engine.
Take care.

Hi,
there are mainly 2 environment variables (set in client
environment) that influence the utilization of temp
dbspaces and/or file system space for sorting tasks
of the server:
- PSORT_DBTEMP
- DBSPACETEMP
Please start reading about these in the manual
"Guide to SQL - Reference" (it refers to other
manuals, but I suggest this manual as starting point).
Regards,
Martin
