Re: Sybase User Asks: Creating Database

Jack, This is one of the biggest problems I encounter when dealing with people from other database systems. They don't understand the Informix terminology. They look at system administration and expect that to cover the administration of the system, the management of the database(s), and the issues concerning transferring data to and from the database. I am often requested to teach people to become Informix DBAs. They seem to have widely different views on what that should entail. Some want to know how to create tables etc, whilst others want to manage the servers. After many years I am no nearer to solving this riddle, but I think I know where the confusion comes from. Oracle. With Oracle they tell me you can only have one database on a machine and within that you have a number of schemas. Therefore Oracle database administration incudes many areas of allocating space to the database etc. Informix has conveniently segmented the two functions by allowing a number of servers on the same machine, and many databses within each server. This makes it possible to segment the functions of server and database administration. But where I disagree with Informix is that they then refer to system administration instead of server admin, and they don't have separate manuals on databse administration. I hope that the change to IBM documentation will resolve some of these issues - in time - but I am afraid that the technical writers will continue to use more words than necessary - even in the manual titles ancd continue to confuse us all. After all what is the difference between Guide to SQL: syntax, Guide to SQL: reference, and Guide to SQL: tutorial, and what is in the Guide to Database Design and Implementation. Maybe we should have started there? regards Malcolm ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jack A" <InformixMail@yahoo.com> To: <informix-list@iiug.org> Sent: Monday, August 04, 2003 9:19 PM Subject: Sybase User Asks: Creating Database > How do we create databases in informix ?
