Hi list! I've Sun Solaris E-10 server with 256 SDRAM 2 x 9.1 gig HDD CD ROM Version 2.6 I want to create a raw device on this system. The system has been received already preformatted and UNIX installed. Can u advise me exactly how to create the raw device? How to create the links to the devices. I'll install Informix 7.31 UC2 and am confident on installation part. I'm stuck up on the job. Please advise me exact steps. TIA Mukund
Just one additional note. Solaris puts the VTOC (ie partition table) on
the first 4K of the drive so you should not use any partition for an
Informix chunk that starts on sector 0 UNLESS you use an offset of at
least 4 when you define the chunk to onmonitor or onspaces. If you do
not do this everything will seem to be OK (because Solaris caches the
VTOC) until you next boot and Solaris can no longer find ANY partitions
on that disk because Informix has overwritten the VTOC with the chunk's
reserved pages. Solaris filesystems do not have this problem because
mkfs knows to always skip 4K at the beginning of any partition.
If the entire drive has not yet been used for filesystems and you are
planning to use it all for Informix it is probably best to repartition
the drive making the zero partition start after the VTOC (I usually skip
the entire first cylinder and my sysadmin likes to skip two cylinders).
