:> :> >I would advise you talk to your Oracle Sales Consultant and find out the :> >truth behind Informix's tall tails that they have the only architecture :> >available to handle large DSS. :> :> Correct me if I'm wrong... :^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ :> :> Informix has the only architecture available to handle large DSS on a :> _UNIX_ platform. :> :I'll bite. Your wrong. Explain otherwise. Tell us *why* informix :has the *only* architecture. I'll give you 500+ gig Oracle refs on :Unix (rapidly approaching 1 terabyte). How about Informix? Oh yah, :these sites handle hundreds/thousands of users too. I'll concede... the word "only" should be changed to the word "best" (OK, Ok... spam spam spam...) :> I could tell my clients to buy mainframes when their business doubles or :> triples but that would put me out of business (They'd fire me for :> suggesting they spend millions of dollars on a hardware solution that :> also requires total rewrite of software with a combersome tool). :> :But you would be wrong here too. Maybe with Informix having different :versions depending on the size of the machine (4.x on Netware, 5.x :on something larger, 6.x on something a little bigger, 7.x on something :else) you would have to have a rewrite for each of the incompatible :version. On the other hand with Oracle 7.1 in production on :everything from WINDOWS to MVS (same set of functionality to boot), :you wouldn't have to re-write anything, period. BTW, at least :with Oracle you would have the *opportunity* to suggest a mainframe :) FYI: you don't need to rewrite your 4GL when you upgrade. If your hardware solution *requires* multi platform, then Oracle is the logical choice. Informix was developed on UNIX for UNIX and can only be compared to Oracle when talking strictly *UNIX* platforms. I don't know enough about Oracle 7.1, and Informix NewEra to compare, but it comes down to the right tool for the job. :Beside, no one would suggest a mainframe for a simple doubling or :tripling of business. Add a CPU, add a disk/controllers, add :some RAM. Its not that *hard* to figure out. My point was that Informix is the better solution on a UNIX platform. :> Please spread half truths someplace else. :> -- :> : :Please spread complete falsehoods to alt.conspiracy (with the rest :of em'). Alright, Jack Parker is right... this is mud slinging. I was getting touchy on all these ~oracle~ people coming here and slamming Informix for not doing things the same way as Oracle does... nothing is perfect. PS: Thomas, Could you please enlighten Scott (refer to the following)? : :Excuse me. Are you somehow suggesting that Oracle *doesn't* run on Unix. :I'm sorry, but I've yet to see the mainframe version of Oracle. Why don't :you get a clue before you respond? : :------Scott Morizot-----------tmorizot@infinity.ccsi.com------ kmart!jregep [My opinions are mine. And I thought I was allowed to express them here.]
