Update Statistics Fails using FDDI interface

We consistently hang our system performing 'Update Statistics' on stored procedures when the procedure uses tables accross servers connected with FDDI interface. If we use an ethernet connection, then no problem. These are DEC Alhpa servers running Unix and on-line 7.24 FC4. Anyone experiencing similar problems or know of a solution??
