4GL Versions
Posted in 1999
Poster asked whether to install Informix 4GL 7.20.UE3 or the newer 7.30.UC1. The only technical answer came from David Williams, who warned that 7.30.UC1 has a serious bug: strings used in PREPARE statements are rewritten with extra spaces (e.g. "select a,b,c" becomes "select a , b , c"), overflowing the variable and corrupting memory; his site was still awaiting a patch. No fix or definitive version recommendation is recorded. The rest of the thread is an argument over a Querix 4GL vendor plug, which ended amicably.

I have just received a copy of a new version of the 4GL compiler, and I have a pretty new (to me) version that I have not yet installed. Please let me know if you have recommendations about these. 4GL 7.20.UE3 or 4GL 7.30.UC1 Thanks for your input. I know that later is USUALLY better, but sometimes your gotta get cut before you can fully understand the pain, and I'd prefer your blood over mine <:-). Chris

LET str = "select a,b,c from t1" PREPARE P1 FROM str str ends up as "select a , b , c from t1" even if it does not fit the variable and corrupts memory after the variable. We are waiting for a patch for this.. >Chris -- David Williams

Please either stop posting to EVERY query about 4GL or turn off the auto responder or something. I propose that NOONE buy Querix if they don't stop these SPAM-like postings. Boycott, boycott, boycott. Art S. I do not respond to EVERY query about 4gl, only the ones that my response is helpful to the problem of the person asking the question. In this particular case I would like to re-iterate that with QueriX he does not have to wary which version of the compiler works with what other version of the database. QueriX unique design allows the connection to all engines. If that is not helpful then please enlighten me. I will further be grateful to you if you could send me a directive to what sort of postings you expect from the people whose sole intention is to help out the users. For many years I suffered as an Informix user myself and know how much you appreciate a helping hand when you need it. QueriX is bringing healthy competition into the market. Surely this can not be bad for the users. Finally this is a news group, people can choose to read what they want. "Art S. Although I do not approve of the way Querix has responded to this e-mail, I think I have to say the following towards the response from Art. I have had just over 12 years of experience with all Informix products and as such I prefer Informix to any other product. Recently we had to port a 4GL program for a client to Oracle (the sales people could not convince him to change to Informix), so I was forced to see what Querix had to offer. I took just under 2 hours to convert the application. We found there are small differences between Querix and Informix 4gl compilers but maybe for the better. We have now decided to use Querix for all our Informix. I do not think that any one should tell whether we should buy or not a product as technical people we have the duty towards our employers to investigate. Clearly using Querix has made a lot of sense to my company as it is saving us a lot and creates new market for us. The case may not be true for every one though. A word of advice for Querix: Try to be more specific when you respond to questions, this would make it more interesting for others to read your mail. With your expertise in Informix and Oracle, you should not limit yourself to responding only to the 4gl questions. Just a note to try to close this sub-thread. I have had a lengthy offline discussion with Mehdi explaining what the beef is and how he can continue to contribute to CDI and promote Querix, which is indeed a fine product, but not seem to be pounding us with unsolicited plugs. He seems to understand that it is valid to propose that Querix may solve someones problem but that he need to address the problem specifically and explain how Querix is a solution, not just plug and run. Let's ease up and see. Art S. I cannot disagree. From everything I have heard and know myself Querix is a fine product. I had no truck with Mehdi recommending his product. I did, however, take truck with Mehdi not answering the question which was "I am planning to upgrade to 4GL 7.30 what problems will I run into". Mehdi could have said: "These are some problems I know about.", or, "There are no problems that I am aware of." and noone would have complained if he felt compelled to add, "BTW Querix's 4GL is just as compatible with 7.20 as 7.30 is and adds several features. You may want to look into it.". But all he did was make a plug for the product and their WEB Site. Now as I said in my earlier follow-up let's drop this sub-thread and like David Williams try to help Chris if we can and stay out if we cannot. My intentions were good, but, none the less, I apologize to the CDI community for starting this. Art S.
