Re: Performance on HP9000

Your are running the RDS verison of 4gl , in this case every single instance of a program will occupy full memory amount for itself (no sharing) . Also loading of the program takes much longer .... RDS compilation generates something called p-code , this gets interpreted by fglgo . There is another way to compile INFORMIX , its 4GL (no RDS) , this acctually translates you i-4gl code in "c" language and then compiles it using "cc" UNIX "c" compiler. This method produces true executables , they load much faster then RDS , also only the first copy of the program uses the full memory others after that use only a portion , this is a great benefeit when having several users running the same application at the same time. The down side of this method is that soemtimes code written for the RDS compiler wont compile or run in 4GL , sometimes changes are required. Ex: in RDS you do not have initialize your variables , numerics are 0 , strings are NULL etc , in 4GL if you do not initialize those you may have problems , there are also some things which RDS allows and "c" does not . Anyways if you have a lot of users using the same app. switching it to 4GL could be a big boost for the RAM, and I would not do any tunning when you are swapping , stoping swapping should be your first priority .... And yes with 160 users runnig RDS apps , add UNIX , and ON-LINE 640 MB is not enough ! Also 4GL compilation is much longer then RDS , note that you could run a mix of apps fglgo and real exec's in the same env. ..
