There is (in my mind, anyway) a small but important difference between "ixSQLConnect does not work" and "can you connect to 2 databases simultaneously using ixSQLConnect". I have not been able to find out until this message what the problem was. AAAARGH!! (And other expressions of frustration) Anyway, so, no, you can't do this with any version below 2.12.
