Oracle to IDS 10/11 migration
Posted in 2007
A poster planning an Oracle 9i (Windows) to IDS 10/11 (Linux) migration asked for migration-planning documentation and clarification on IDS/CSDK licensing. Replies pointed to IBM's free Migration Toolkit (MTK) for the schema/SQL conversion, and warned that embedded SQL in applications, Oracle packages, trigger logic and data-type mapping need manual review. On licensing: Informix Connect is free for clients, CSDK is free to use but support/development licensing is chargeable, and C4GL runtimes must be paid for; pricing questions were referred to an IBM rep. A side discussion noted Oracle's multiversion reads mean no select locks, and that IDS 11's "committed read last committed" isolation (USELASTCOMMITTED) eases this with little performance cost.

Hi there, I have been given responsibility to make a cost effective proposal to migrate one of our production database from Oracle 9i.R2 (Windows 2K) to IDS 10/11 (Linux). It's a c/s application. I am in the process of collating info. on resources, time lines, costing, risk analysis, cost-benefit analysis etc. etc. It's a big challenge for me at the moment to present a very cost effective IDS solution. My questions are: 1. Has any one got any template or a link for a good document for this purpose? 2. Regd. IDS and SDK/CSDK licenses, can someone please clarify; a) I am assuming on server, IDS and SDK both need to be installed? b) From my understanding, IDS & server side SDK are bundled together. Server side SDK will cover under IDS licenses. No separate license required for server side SDK? c) Licenses for client side SDK (CSDK)/Informix connect will be required, if support from IBM is required for CSDK. No license, no support but CSDK still can used? As always, thanks very much in advance. Cheers. --------------------------------- Sick sense of humor? Visit Yahoo! H, This is the wrong group for this sort of question. You really need to talk to an IBM sales rep. As for the actual conversion, you should look for the migration toolkit (MTK) - I don't know where it is hiding on the IBM website. j. -----Original Message----- From: ids-bounces@iiug.org [mailto:ids-bounces@iiug.org]On Behalf Of H.G Sent: Friday, August 10, 2007 7:17 AM To: ids@iiug.org Subject: Oracle to IDS 10/11 migration [9750] Hi there, I have been given responsibility to make a cost effective proposal to migrate one of our production database from Oracle 9i.R2 (Windows 2K) to IDS 10/11 (Linux). I agree with Jack conversion is easier with a toolkit, however having done a half dozen fairly large systems there are several things to consider that go beyond the actual database. 1. embedded SQL statements in application code 2. packages in oracle 3. trigger logic 4. field type changes (mapping char, number, date, and xlob fields) between the two systems. 5. the conversion software should take care of most of the syntax changes in functions, procs, and packages but should be validated carefully. IBM's migration toolkit is a no-charge offering that can help with the migration of the database. Look for it off the IBM/Informix site. For the client-side executables, I-Connect is the product used. This is a no-charge product and can be freely installed on your client machines. The each developer will need the CSDK license which includes I-Connect. The CSDK is a chargeable product. Speak to your business partner or IBM representative about pricing. Andreas,
No real impact. We are simply maintaining the LSN of the update which
caused the update lock within the lock structure. That means we can go=
directly to the log record containing the before image.

IDS includes runtime support for remote and local clients, however, shared library support for 4GL, and Client SDK clients running locally on the server will require installation of runtime or development copy of C4GL or CSDK as appropriate. C4GL is not free if you are using that you have to pay for the runtimes. CSDK is free without support, support is extra. Art S. Kagel ----- Original Message ----- From: H.G <ids@iiug.org> At: 8/10 7:17:00 Hi there, I have been given responsibility to make a cost effective proposal to migrate one of our production database from Oracle 9i.R2 (Windows 2K) to IDS 10/11 (Linux). Please respond to

Andreas,
No real impact. We are simply maintaining the LSN of the update which
caused the update lock within the lock structure. That means we can go=
directly to the log record containing the before image.

Hi,
thats a very interesting feature, but how is the performance impact?
I presume IDS has to lookup the values in the logical logs and they
are not designed for this kind of job?!
Nevertheless this might be very helpful for migrations from
Oracle to Informix.

Thank you VERY much Art as always. Ur reply has given me a clear understanding which will certainly help me for costing.
