Re: Small database - No. Disks

Dave, Direct emails bounce; please check that your mailer or news system provides a properly qualified email name -- probably something like dave@credo.ei or dave@columbo.credo.co.ei rather than just dave@columbo. Or include your domain-qualified email address in your signature. You get some performance benefit from reduced disk contention if the logical log is on a different disk from the physical log and both are on a different disk than the main database, and all the database is on a different disk from the Unix file systems. This applies to any size of database. Whether it is worth doing is another matter altogether. Given the work pattern, provided there is enough time margin for the overnight processing to complete when the database reaches the 600 MB level, there is no pressing reason to distribute the bits and pieces. On the other hand, if there are (going to be) problems with the overnight work, then splitting the database may provide some improvement, but the biggest improvement will almost certainly be algorithmic. In general, disk layout tuning provides small performance benefits -- though there are exceptions if the tuning can relieve contention between, for example, two large, randomly accessed tables.
