9.40.UC2 Startup on RedHat 9
Posted in 2003
Rob could not initialise IDS 9.40.UC2 on Red Hat 9: oninit -ivy stopped silently right after "Bringing up ADM VP...". Suggestions were to check the online log, verify with ldd that oninit resolves libpthread.so.0 to /lib/i686, and install the compat-libstdc++ RPM; Rob already had compat-libstdc++ and had downgraded glibc to the i686 2.3.2-11.9 build, but the failure persisted and he asked whether LD_LIBRARY_PATH/SHLIB_DIRS matter. Another poster simply advised running Red Hat 7.3 instead. No confirmed resolution is recorded.

I'm trying to initialise a database instance of IDS
9.40.UC2 on RedHat 9 (kernel 2.4.21, glibc-2.3.2-11.9.i686) However, when I
run the oninit -iv command I get as far as the message "Bringing up the ADM
VP..." and that's it. No further messages. The following is the exact output
from my shell:
/home/informix> oninit -ivy
Checking group membership to determine server run modesucceeded
Reading configuration file '/home/informix/etc/onconfig.aedb'...succeeded
Creating /INFORMIXTMP/.infxdirs ... succeeded
Creating infos file "/home/informix/etc/.infos.aeshm" ...
"/home/informix/etc/.conf.aeshm" ... succeeded
Writing to infos file ... succeeded
Checking config parameters...succeeded
Allocating and attaching to shared memory...succeeded
Creating resident pool 3750 kbytes...succeeded
Creating buffer pool 20002 kbytes...succeeded
Initializing rhead structure...succeeded
Initializing ASF ...succeeded
Initializing Dictionary Cache and SPL Routine Cache...succeeded
Bringing up ADM VP.../home/informix>
I'm only running a small DB, hence the relatively small resident and buffer
pools... Any ideas?
TIA
Rob

The command
ldd $INFORMIXDIR/bin/oninit
should show the right path to pthread library:
libpthread.so.0 => /lib/i686/libpthread.so.0

hi,
pleas try this:
Installation IDS 9.40.UC2/ RedHat 9
you need compat-libstdc:
CD1/RedHat/RPMS/compat-libstdc++-7.3-2.96.118.i386.rpm
install with rpm -ivh compat-libstdc++-7.3-2.96.118.i386.rpm

compat-libstdc++-7.3-2... is already installed, but I
still get the same problem on startup. - I had to
"upgrade" my glibc from 2.3.2-27.9.7 with the older
version of 2.3.2-11.9 in order to install a version of
glibc with i686 compatibility but it would appear that
these older libraries are not being recognised by the
informix installation. Does oninit recognise the
LD_LIBRARY_PATH or SHLIB_DIRS environment variables
and, if so, to what should they be set? Any other ideas?
Thanks for the help so far.

Hi brother, Try to downgrade (yes, DOWNGRADE) your RedHat server to 7.3 We have running dozens of 9.40 engines under RedHat 7.3 in production environments without trouble at all. While doing deployment tests, we found some weird behaviour and problems under RH 8.0. (before 9.0 hit the streets) so we decided to go directly to 7.3. I'm affraid some problmes could appear in RH 9.0 Hope it helps
