non ASCII characters in text column

we have a text column and a requirement has come from a particular user that it should contain text in encrypted form. now the encrypted text will contain non ASCII characters. Is it possible for the text column to store one row in ASCII text and another row in non-ASCII text. Will it have any repercussions. Thanks. Ravi
