Jeremy, From my recruiting experience with Informix DBA's I have found that they are generally more dedicated to remaining on an assignment and in most cases are very well paid which makes it difficult to try to use $ as a motivating factor. We have found that the reason our DBA's stay with us is because in addition to offering competitive salaries, we also offer them a very comprehensive benefit package along with a level of participation with our management staff that most other consulting firms won't allow. Although we prefer to hire DBA's as staff consultants, we have also become very liberal with working with 1099 Ind. consultants and with subcontracting DBA's from other consulting firms so that we can stay on top of our clients needs. If your firm is able to recruit from outside the US, I also know that there are sizeable pockets of candidates in India and the Russian republics that are very anxious to come to the US. We don't recruit from outside the US and instead have to rely on the US based market. So far, although not an easy process, we feel we are still pretty successful at attracting good DBA's to our staff. Is there a magic solution? No - other than hard consistent work and alot of networking. Hope this helps.
