Informix Upgradation

Hi We are using Informix 7.23UC4 on solaris 2.5.1. We intend to upgrade to 7.24. I believe we have to do a fresh installation of 7.24. Should I backup the existing sqlhosts and onconfig file. After they installation I copy backup the sqlhosts and onconfig file. Other than this what are the other steps involve in upgradation. My only worry is that it should not destroy my live data. Shall be grateful for any suggestions. Thanks Muhammad Usman

You are not compelled to do so, but I would strongly advise you to do so. > Should I backup the existing sqlhosts and onconfig file. You'll need copies of them in the new INFORMIXDIR, so yes. On the other hand, while you're loading the new INFORMIXDIR, the old one will not be touched, so you can do this after the event if you wish. But you've picked on the key files, assuming you have just one instance of OnLine running. > After the installation I copy backup the sqlhosts and onconfig file. Correct. > Other than this what are the other steps involve in upgradation. > My only worry is that it should not destroy my live data. > > Shall be grateful for any suggestions. Basically, once you've installed the new software, make sure you do a full archive (level 0) of the database before you take it offline as a 7.23 instance and bring it back up as a 7.24 instance. I'm not sure whether there are fall-back facilities available to downgrade from 7.24 back to 7.23 if you run into problems, not that I'd expect any, but... You should read the documentation and release notes to see what your options are. -- Jonathan Leffler (jleffler@informix.com, jleffler@earthlink.net) Guardian of DBD::Informix v0.60 -- see http://www.perl.com/CPAN #include <disclaimer.h>

The 7.24 engine install procedure is going to be the same whether or not you already have another version on the system. Perhaps you are referring to making a new $INFORMIXDIR so you keep the old one around (just in case...). In any case, a 7.24 engine will recognize a pre-existing earlier database version (such as your 7.23UC4) and make the necessary structure changes the first time it comes up. All you have to do to make this happen is make sure your onconfig file is in the right place and pointed at by $ONCONFIG when you bring the new engine up. I don't think there are any awful time-consuming large-scale structure changes going from 7.23 to 7.24; I think all that happens is the sysmaster database gets rebuilt to correctly map the new shared memory structures. Yes, you WILL want a good set of archives on hand. It's not that there's a great risk of failure. Just call it a required obesience to the great Murphy. I'd rather have an archive and not need it, than need an archive and not have it. After the 7.24 engine come us, be real sure to run UPDATE STATISTICS using your usual options. There are changes in the statistics info between 7.23 and 7.24, and the old structures can make the new engine get assert failures and core dump. Jude
pretty straight forward upgrade Mohammed, refer to page 1-6 upgrade
matrix in the migration guide, bring down the server, extract 7.24
and bring up the server (oninit -vy) with the ol' onconfig, environment and
sqlhosts,
all should be fine, should you have doubts, take a level 0 archive
before you start...;-)

Also if you want to be safe use dbexport to save your db schema.
Nothing should happen to it, but in case.
