RE: Oracle backups so a bit OT
Posted in 2005
Well I've had more trouble with omniback - now data protector than any
other backup manager to-date. I found that omniback in particular did
not play well in environments where you might want to use the production
backups as a means of conveniently creating multiple test/qa
environments on a single machine. It has also proved harder to setup
with respect to using relative pathnames for the chunks. The naming of
the backup objects was the main source of the problem in all cases. The
naming of the logfiles on the backup were the biggest source of pain
since they contained the servernumber/servername. I seem to remember
that to restore the logs the servernumber/name had to be the same as the
source instance in order to work successfully. It was rather annoying
because the dbspaces would restore fine.

I wasn't really talking about the installation of Data Protector and
onbar ,
or even taking backups with it. I was referring to the critical issue
of
its ease of use and reliability when you need to restore.
I have to say that several people, including one but not all of my
colleagues, and Obnoxio in a private, reckon it's absolutely rock-solid
and
intuitive, and it must just be me!
