I am assuming that this load can happen with the users online, and that
the only issue is that the users are selecting data from the table you
are trying to update.
Have you SET LOCK MODE TO WAIT?
This will cause your program to wait for a lock if it can not get one
initially.
If you do not want to wait forever in the case where you can't aquire a lock
SET LOCK MODE TO WAIT n
where n is the number of seconds which you are willing to wait for the lock.
If these things do not solve your problem, posting information
about the following might be helpful.
1. The purpose of your update program
2. How much of the data is being changed.
3. Is all the data being changed in one transaction.
4. What the table(tables) being updated are being used for (OLTP, DSS)
at this point I have assumed DSS due to the fact your are on 8.x
