Setting up HDR- First Time -11.70 Innovator-C
Posted in 2011
Sunil was configuring HDR for the first time on IDS 11.70 Innovator-C; the secondary stayed in Fast Recovery and the log showed "DR: Cannot connect to primary server / DR: Turned off on secondary server". Suggestions covered checking UPDATABLE_SECONDARY (and its separate licensing), comparing mismatched parameters in both message logs, and verifying /etc/hosts, /etc/services, hosts.equiv/.rhosts and sqlhosts on both machines, plus the correct backup/physical-restore sequence. Since dbaccess connections still prompted for a password, the cause was diagnosed as missing host trust (hosts.equiv entries on both sides); Sunil acknowledged the advice but no confirmed fix is recorded.

Hi,
I am setting up HDR for the first time.
onstat - on primary shows
IBM Informix Dynamic Server Version 11.70.UC2IE -- On-Line (Prim) -- Up 0:11:5s
onstat - on secondry shows
IBM Informix Dynamic Server Version 11.70.UC2IE -- Fast Recovery (Sec) -- Up00s
onstat -m on secondry shows (while issuing onmode -d secondary primaryserver)
DR Cannot Connect to primary server
DR Turned off on secondary server
IBM Informix Dynamic Server Stopped
Any inputs would be helpful.
Thanks- Sunil
Hello.
Your secondary node is not an UPDATABLE_SECONDARY, really.
Check your configurations, ok?
# UPDATABLE_SECONDARY - Controls whether secondary servers can accept
# update, insert, and delete operations from clients.
# If enabled, specifies the number of connection
# threads between the secondary and primary servers
# for transmitting updates from the secondary.
# Acceptable values are:
# 0 Secondary server is read-only (default)
# 1 through twice the number of CPU VPs, threads
# for performing updates from the secondary.
# Valid for HDR, SDS, and RSS.
Attention! If you need your secondary node as a Read-Write one, you
should license it separately! ;)
Best regards.

First let's know the exact steps that you took.
Second - look at the message log file on the primary and secondary. There
are several parameters which must match up. If they don't then a message
will be places in the message log file describing the mis-matches.

Hi - Thanks for the response.
On my Secondary
UPDATABLE_SECONDARY = 0 (Default)I am going to use this as Read Only. This should take care of the License i
guess.
Am trying to figure out links in /etc/services - /etc/sqlhosts -/etc/host.equiv
Thanks - Sunil
Hi Sunil,
It seems that your problem come from a connection problem (possibly a
server trust problem).
You need to create a small instance on the secondary machine just for
testing purposes (on small chunk is enough); Create the stores database
in it.
Then try to connect from your primary instance (thru dbaccess) to that
"test" instance in order to see if you can see the data.
Make sure that /etc/services, /etc/hosts, and /etc/hosts.equiv or
.rhosts and the sqlhosts files on both sides are set correctly,
otherwise the connections will fail.
If this works OK, then go ahead to try set up your HDR:
1/ Primary
- engine up and running
- ontape or onbar for the whole instance
- onmode -d primary <secondary instance name>
2/ Secondary
- restore the instance backed up on the primary thru ontape or onbar
(need a physical restore: ontape )p for example)
- onmode - d secondary <primary instance name>
Advice: have enough logs available in order not to loop thru the logs
list between the time you backup on the primary and the time you finish
th restore. If not you will need to go go get the logs from the logs
backed up.
Follow the contents of the online.log file to see the progress.

Hi Khaled,
Thanks for your reply. I did follow the steps that you mentioned.
Before starting HDR i was able to connect primary to secondary and vice vesa
through dbaccess. I had to give user name and password to connect.
How ever on secondary server after giving
onmode -d secondary primaryservername,i am still getting
12:54:16 DR: new type = secondary, primary server name = serv1
12:54:16 DR: Trying to connect to primary server = serv1
12:54:16 DR: Cannot connect to primary server
12:54:16 DR: Turned off on secondary server
/etc/hosts
On Primary:
contains entry for Primary Server only
On Secondry:
Contains entry for Secondry Server only
/etc/hosts.equiv
On Primary
Contains entry for Secondry Server only
ON Secondry
No Entry
/etc/services
On Primary and Secondry Server
Contains port/setvice entries for both the Servers and Vice Versa
$INFORMIXDIR/etc/sqlhosts
On Primary and Secondry Server
Contains entries for both the Servers and Vice Versa
Has it got something to do with trusted connecton?.
Thanks once again- Sunil
If you had to enter a passwd, you have obviously a trusting problem.
Check /etc/hosts.equiv on both servers
