Backup media

I'm looking into backup media for my Informix database as well as ontape vs
onbar. We currently have 4mm Dat drives in our box which aren't sufficient.
My hardware vendor wants to sell me DLT drives and was downplaying 8mm
drives. Talking to another tape drive vendor and they were downplaying DLT
drives and wanted to sell me 8mm drives. Both vendors sell both types but
each has their preference and are telling me why I shouldn't use the other
type of media. Now I'm confused. From your experience, is one really
better than the other? Any recommendations?
As I said, I'm also looking into onbar. Of the various 3rd party options
that are out there to interface with onbar, what are your
experiences/recommendations? We are on 7.30 so I do have ISM available as
an option. I realize it is scaled down, but does it stack up sufficiently
against the 3rd party solutions?

We use DLT7000 on Sun and a RAID array of 5 DLT4000 on DG systems and
have found them reliable. 4mm DAT is no good we used to use it and had
far too many bad tapes, if it were not for the DG RAID tape array's
ability to rebuild tape sets we would have had more than a few
disasters. I have never used 8mm DAT but have always heard that they
are also very reliable. I believe that DLT is faster though.
