still can't initialize the f*!@# raw devices

this seems to be a common problem for newbies but it has never been answered in a satisfactorily manner: Why can't I initialize the raw devices on our sun ultrasparc running solaris 2.6? It must be a really simple and stupid thing that I have done wrong. Please don't tell me that the partitions have bad spots, this is unlikely because the machine is new. Moreover, I have successfully installed cooked devices on the same disks, in different partitions. When I try to bring IDS /UD into quiescent or online mode, the server writes something about assert failures into the online log.
