What are the logs used for in a no logging database? For example, if I > update every row in a table with 10 million rows with a single update > statement and I interrupted it half way through would the first 5 million > updates be rolled back? Would it use the logs for this purpose? There is no way of doing any rollbacks at all without logs. That is one of the things the logs are used for. Your 5 million records would be permanently updated. I have been told by Informix that the logs are used even in a no logging database when new extents are allocated to a table. I once got an error about full logs when I did an insert into tab2 select * from tab1 and had forgotten to set the first extent properly on tab2 first. The error was gracefull but the insert stoped.
