Ugh! Ok... Here's the embarrasing story... I originally tried an installation before changing the /etc/system file. And I never actually removed the old directory, I figured an install would completely re-install all files, however this musn't be the case. After doing a rm -r on the informix root dir and reinstalling, it works like a champ (so far)... Thanks anway...
