Ok, I'll bite - and since fostering discussion is good for this sort of thing - in public no less. 1st question - have you tried just restarting the server? If that doesn't give you the same thing as rebooting the hardware then all you've proved is that it isn't the engine/hardware combo. If this DOES give you the same good response then you need to start looking into what is going inside the engine - are users backing up with silly things like hogging buffers, locks, doing the rollback thing etc. etc. If you don't see any clues there then it's time to look at the hardware. Is it doing a lot of swapping? Swapping is NOT a good thing. What does the bottleneck seem to be - you mention cpu% from sar, that should be divided into 3 categories wio usr and sys. Which of these is going high? If wio% then swapping could be a culprit or start checking which disks are getting hit the most (vmstat -d? I forget). Then see what is on those disks - is it the swap device? the /tmp device? the raw partition? Are they all the same device (bummer)? Once you get the hang of it - it's just divide and conquer. See what is slow and then check out what makes up those parts and then check each one. Sorry - that was a long question. Tell me/us what happens and maybe I/we'll get some more bright (or not so bright) ideas. cheers j. _____________________________________________________________________________ Jack Parker | Hewlett Packard, BSMC Boise, Idaho, USA| Someday you'll go far, jparker@hpbs3645.boi.hp.com | if you catch the right train.
