Informix on HP MoonShot
Posted in 2014
Not a problem report but an announcement/discussion: Art Kagel touted Informix as the only commercial RDBMS running on HP's new ARM-based Moonshot micro-servers, sketching large HDR/SDS cluster configurations. Richard Kofler asked for an official statement, since press coverage was vague; Fernando Nunes pointed to HP's press release and noted an ARM 32-bit port on IBM Fix Central, questioning whether it runs on 64-bit ARM. Art assumed ARMv8 is fully backward compatible, but IBM developer Andreas Breitfeld corrected this: Debian ARMv7 binaries won't execute on ARMv8, which is why a native 64-bit Informix port was made. The rest covered core counts per m400 cartridge/chassis and licensing/PVU speculation.

When HP announced its new ARM32 and ARM64 based Moonshot micro-server yesterday there was only one commercial database that already supported the platform: IBM Informix. Today there still is only one. Imagine running your relational or JSON collection database on a server built into a single rack with 90 Informix High Availability Data Replication pairs of servers each with 4 cores (360 pairs of cores essentially) with your data sharded across all 90 MoonShot CPU modules into a massive distributed database server. Or how about 180 Shared Disk Secondary Servers each with 4 cores (so 720 cores) configured as a massive single Cluster serving a single database on disk all in one cabinet with 35% lower power and cooling requirements than traditional servers. Either way, IBM Informix's Connection Manager can manage load balancing many thousands of simultaneous users across all of the server modules in either of these database server farms, manage connection and server failover if one or more components fail, and all without losing a single in-flight transaction (Informix transaction survival feature)! The NoSQL folks say that relational databases do not scale out, BULLSHIT. IBM Informix scales up and out all at the same time with full redundancy to boot! Keep in mind that IBM's Informix Dynamic Server is the ONLY RDBMS built from the ground up to run efficiently on SMP, MPP, and distributed architectures. The visionary work that Informix Corp. did in the early 1990's is proving its worth over 20 years later! Art Art S. Naturally IBM/IIUG should make a statement... But I hope you trust HP own words: http://www8.hp.com/us/en/hp-news/press-release.html?id=1800094 And you can actually download the port for ARM 32 bits from IBM's FixCentral site. The announced servers have both 32bit and 64bit versions. Honestly I don't know if the 32bit port runs on the 64bit systems. Fernando: ARM 64bit processors are 100% compatible with ARM 32bit software according to the ARM and AM (the only current producer of 64bit ARM processors) web sights. That said, a 64bit port would be nice. Maybe for 12.10.FC5? Art Art S. To all: FYI, I just found out that the M400 module for the MoonShot sports an Applied Micro X-Gene 64bit ARM processor which has 8 cores, not 4 as I originally thought. So not 720 cores per server farm, but 1,440 processor cores! I don't even want to THINK about what the IDS license cost for that beast would cost even it would be rated at 50 PVU/core (IBM has not yet published its PVU ratings for the ARM processors), but if you need the scaleability and raw horsepower, <expletive deleted> this is the dragon to ride! I don't think this is very relevant, but from what I read m400 allows 45 cartridges. Each has 8 cores. You're counting 90 instead of 45... And I'm not sure if one can fill the m400 just with these types of cartridges or if we have to include others like power supplies and networking switches. In any case it would be a lot of CPUs. Point is, how slow they are compared to more usual inhabitants of the datacenter... Regards. In practice a binary compiled with Debian on ARMv7 architecture (ARM32) can not be executed on ARMv8 (ARM64). Thats one reason why we made a native Informix port for this new platform. Counting 90 because you can put 4 units in a rack each holding 45 m400 modules. With two units holdint primary servers and two holdinh HDR secondaries that's 90 HDR pairs per rack.
