Creating dbspace in raw partition ownership error
Posted in 2012
Topics: Storage & Space Management, Server Administration
I am trying to create a mirrored dbspace with IDS 11.7 and CentOS 6.3
# ln -s /dev/sdb1 /z/Uni/ids/dbspaces/unidbspace
# ln -s /dev/sdc1 /z/Uni/ids/dbspaces/unidbspace_mirror
I change the ownership thus.
brw-rw---- 1 informix informix 8, 17 Oct 5 12:56 /dev/sdb1
brw-rw---- 1 informix informix 8, 33 Oct 5 12:46 /dev/sdc1
After onspaces command:
# onspaces -c -d unidbs -p /z/Uni/ids/dbspaces/unidbspace -s 10000000 -o
200000 -m /z/Uni/ids/dbspaces/unidbspace_mirror 200000Verifying physical disk space, please wait ...
The chunk '/z/Uni/ids/dbspaces/unidbspace' must have owner-ID "informix"
and group-ID "informix".
and the ownership has reverted by the onspaces command
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 8, 17 Oct 5 12:56 /dev/sdb1
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 8, 33 Oct 5 12:46 /dev/sdc1
How do I work around this?
This is as user Informix or root
Regards
Rob
The first thing that i note here is that you are configuring your chunks to=
buffered devices. This is not such a great idea. Look for devices with a s=
imilar name but have a 'c' as the first character of the permissions field.=
So crw-rw----.

The onspaces utility does not muck with the chunk file/device's
permissions. Something in CentOS is doing that.
FYI - using a block device for chunks Informix cannot use kernel ASYNC IO
nor DIRECT IO so performance will be slower than if you used the
corresponding character (raw) device or even an OS file in a filesystem
that supports DIRECT IO (O_DIRECT). FWIW.

Well, hasn't this been a learning curve, unravelling this ball of wool :
I missed the point somewhere along the line, was confused by an existing
client
who 'appears' to have a /dev/sda4 block device (which sounded wrong from
the
beginning - but is on an older version of CentOS).
The example in the IDS course online notes does show a character device
....
The trick seems to be: take these guys and work with them
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 8, 17 Oct 5 12:56 /dev/sdb1
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 8, 33 Oct 5 12:46 /dev/sdc1
# raw /dev/raw/raw1 8 17
Or
# raw /dev/raw/raw1 /dev/sdb1
And the same for /dev/sdc1
# raw -qa
/dev/raw/raw1: bound to major 8, minor 17
/dev/raw/raw2: bound to major 8, minor 33
# chown informix:informix /dev/raw/raw?
# ls -l /dev/raw/raw?
crw-rw---- 1 informix informix 162, 1 Oct 5 17:05 /dev/raw/raw1
crw-rw---- 1 informix informix 162, 2 Oct 5 17:06 /dev/raw/raw2
# ln -s /dev/raw/raw1 unidbspace
# ln -s /dev/raw/raw2 unidbspace_mirror
And then :
# onspaces -c -d unidbs -p /z/Uni/ids/dbspaces/unidbspace -s 10000000
-o 200000 -m /z/Uni/ids/dbspaces/unidbspace_mirror 200000Verifying physical disk space, please wait ...
Verifying physical disk space, please wait ...
And I wait :)
Hopefully waiting for good news.
Regards
Rob
