Sudden 'insert', etc : fixed !
Posted in 2004
Hello again, Our performance issue on inserts has been fixed, at least workarounded. Here's the story : recently I carried on the same test (insert loop) on a temporary table and noticed that when the table was created "with log" (by default), the insert times were abnormally long, whereas if the temporary table was created "with no log", the inserts were very quick (less than 0.3 ms), clearly indicating that the logging system probably had to be involved. Then I saw that the log status of the database was "unbuffered" and switched it to "buffered" (that needs to temporarily disconnect all users) and... it was magic :-) That said, we know that the log status of the database had allways been unbuffered before the incident, and that did not affect the performances so far. We now strongly suspect a hardware failure of a disk cache, causing the (unbuffered) writes to become suddenly very long, and are investigating this way. Thanks anyway for your help and suggestions, -- Christian
