This may be obvious to non-newbies but it wasn't to the author of some code I recently debugged. A while back I posted a plea for help regarding a realatively straightforward query which was taking many minutes to complete using the standard engine. Replies pointed me to SET EXPLAIN ON (very useful) and a discussion of indices. It turns out the problem was actually caused by an unnecessary use of the reserved word "MATCHES". Apparently the author believed that "MATCHES" was supposed to be used for all string comparisons, when in fact "=" is fine for simple string comparisons. --- Peter Levine | peterl@minerva x 24945 PBX Software Engineering | levinep@pnna (408) 492-4945 Siemens ROLM Communications Incorporated | peterl@minerva.robadome.com
