Have you looked at the Unix eqn program which works with troff or its GNU equivalents? You could store the text in a big CHAR column. The TeX language will also do this, I believe. Designing a visual equation editor which is easy to use is not trivial - look at MS's first pathetic attempts delivered with Office. Do you wish to manipulate these equations in any way? If so, the problem is even bigger.
