Re: Out of Box Experience for Cheetah.
Posted in 2007
A feature-wish discussion rather than a problem report: contributors argue that Informix ships with a bare default ONCONFIG and should offer a better out-of-the-box setup. Suggestions include sample onconfig templates (sandbox/small/medium/large with set CPU, memory, dbspace and temp-space sizes) and an install wizard that detects RAM and CPU count and asks about database size, connections, OLTP vs DW, and disk to generate a baseline config. Counterpoints: what counts as 'reasonable', how to count dual-core/hyperthreaded CPUs, and possible vendor liability for tuning advice. No vendor change or fix is recorded; the thread ends with the idea of a community-built tool, with Obnoxio agreeing to lead it.

You could do the following: 1) Query the system to determine the amount of memory and the # of CPUs 2) Ask the user the approximate size of the database (small, medium or large) giving a rough range of each. 3) Ask the user the number of simultaneous connections one can expect. 4) Ask the user if this is an OLTP, DW or both environment. 5) Aks the user how many CPUs he wants to use. (Assuming multiple core/cpu system.) [Ignore if only 1 cpu found] 6) How much disk space he wants to allocate to the system. Create a base config from this input. While it won't be perfect, it will be enough to get a "better" tuned system out of the box. >From: DL Redden <redden96@yahoo.com> >To: Mark Jamison <majp51@yahoo.com> >CC: Informix List <informix-list@iiug.org> >Subject: Re: Out of Box Experience for Cheetah. >Date: Wed, 21 Mar 2007 18:23:28 -0700 (PDT) >MIME-Version: 1.0 >Received: from perform.iiug.org ([216.177.38.211]) by >bay0-mc9-f4.bay0.hotmail.com with Microsoft SMTPSVC(6.0.3790.2668); Wed, 21 >Mar 2007 18:23:51 -0700 >Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1])by perform.iiug.org >(Postfix) with ESMTP id 0D258A01B;Wed, 21 Mar 2007 20:23:45 -0500 (EST) >Received: from perform.iiug.org ([127.0.0.1])by localhost (perform.iiug.org >[127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024)with ESMTP id L2xUsKHZVlRN; Wed, 21 >Mar 2007 20:23:38 -0500 (EST) >Received: by perform.iiug.org (Postfix, from userid 60001)id 1A322A010; >Wed, 21 Mar 2007 20:23:38 -0500 (EST) >Received: from perform.iiug.org (localhost [127.0.0.1])by perform.iiug.org >(Postfix) with ESMTP id 97E22A001;Wed, 21 Mar 2007 20:23:34 -0500 (EST) >Received: from localhost (localhost [127.0.0.1])by perform.iiug.org >(Postfix) with ESMTP id 9DB0C9FFBfor <informix-list@iiug.org>; Wed, 21 Mar >2007 20:23:33 -0500 (EST) >Received: from perform.iiug.org ([127.0.0.1])by localhost (perform.iiug.org >[127.0.0.1]) (amavisd-new, port 10024)with ESMTP id ofOP-K7vqNiu for ><informix-list@iiug.org>;Wed, 21 Mar 2007 20:23:30 -0500 (EST) >Received: by perform.iiug.org (Postfix, from userid 60001)id 7937CA001; >Wed, 21 Mar 2007 20:23:30 -0500 (EST) >Received: from web30808.mail.mud.yahoo.com >(web30808.mail.mud.yahoo.com[68.142.200.151])by perform.iiug.org (Postfix) >with SMTP id 130969FFBfor <informix-list@iiug.org>; Wed, 21 Mar 2007 >20:23:27 -0500 (EST) >Received: (qmail 59296 invoked by uid 60001); 22 Mar 2007 01:23:28 -0000 >Received: from [68.188.39.38] by web30808.mail.mud.yahoo.com via HTTP;Wed, >21 Mar 2007 18:23:28 PDT >X-Message-Info: >LsUYwwHHNt2lNPQ4KS2MdiJtTdgArKnBucXFA/safx8gyWDN4JZZbNRv3bYlRl+L >X-Virus-Scanned: amavisd-new at iiug.org >X-Original-To: informix-list@iiug.org >Delivered-To: informix-list@iiug.org >X-Virus-Scanned: amavisd-new at iiug.org >X-Greylist: domain auto-whitelisted by SQLgrey-1.7.4 >DomainKey-Signature: a=rsa-sha1; q=dns; c=nofws; s=s1024; >d=yahoo.com;h=X-YMail-OSG:Received:X-Mailer:Date:From:Subject:To:Cc:MIME-Version:Content-Type:Message-ID;b=2QHGWSRP1m/oMS+nLir7D/qLCfQGH+dRTTSofx5Bcjjwjrtm3mrQzyxpJVmP+YdMXBV35jLRv/k1WligaF8bhu9QVWN6SJK0ZbV0hqYCbZWGRdnVkNIk97Gro2HaldjNKdy5kiRjMtXyOvc+R/2u8KCym8jWYyA6GAfsV3Xzr5E=; >X-YMail-OSG: >ARkRbPYVM1m.VA4a7ABmVO5D5XvnJmUAX.6i_ByQ.BUiVJu0mbyN.fQg0JsNV0crtr_IC4vQdTq7n3XPQrDf2gHDF6.b2co2L9HTH14n8LlVfKs7om9O6TwjQ1dYUAzC >X-Mailer: YahooMailRC/476 YahooMailWebService/0.7.41.8 >X-BeenThere: informix-list@iiug.org >X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.6 >Precedence: list >List-Id: "comp.databases.informix" <informix-list.iiug.org> >List-Unsubscribe: ><http://www.iiug.org/mailman/listinfo/informix-list>,<mailto:informix-list-request@iiug.org?subject=unsubscribe> >List-Archive: <http://www.iiug.org/pipermail/informix-list> >List-Post: <mailto:informix-list@iiug.org> >List-Help: <mailto:informix-list-request@iiug.org?subject=help> >List-Subscribe: ><http://www.iiug.org/mailman/listinfo/informix-list>,<mailto:informix-list-request@iiug.org?subject=subscribe> >Errors-To: informix-list-bounces@iiug.org >Return-Path: informix-list-bounces@iiug.org >X-OriginalArrivalTime: 22 Mar 2007 01:23:53.0764 (UTC) >FILETIME=[C1176E40:01C76C20] > >My thought was to offer a quick list of suggestions that were customized to >the box being installed on instead of having a predefined list of >configurations that may not even be practical for the machine being >installed on. No disrespect Neil, but using your logic they would have to dump all the docs, release notes, training manuals, etc. Some amount of guidance is expected, and there _is_ a software agreement in effect when you install the software. It's understood that you have to tune it, and if anything, there are not enough solid guidelines to this day to elevate tuning above the black art it is today. -t- Neil Truby wrote: > Also, knowing the way big bendors think, I wouldn't be surpisedif there > would be legal reservations about providing too much bespoke "guidance" in > case it all went wrong and they felt that they might be liable in some way. > > "Ian Michael Gumby" <im_gumby@hotmail.com> wrote in message > news:mailman.463.1174576945.10648.informix-list@iiug.org... >> You could do the following: >> >> 1) Query the system to determine the amount of memory and the # of CPUs >> 2) Ask the user the approximate size of the database (small, medium or >> large) giving a rough range >> of each. >> 3) Ask the user the number of simultaneous connections one can expect. >> 4) Ask the user if this is an OLTP, DW or both environment. >> 5) Aks the user how many CPUs he wants to use. Why can't all these things that people are suggesting be done outside IBM? It seems to me that if you really want some of these things that there is a great opportunity for everyone's ideas to be something you contribute to the community as a team. Whether it's an interactive tool or template onconfigs, can't this be something a bunch of people work on together?
