Informix 4gl -- Autistic Compiler?
Posted in 1993
After many man hours of trying to clean up code with Informix 4gl and ID, I have become of the personal opinion that the 4gl compiler is radically impaired with regards to checking for pre-runtime errors. It is also very unfortunate that Informix has taken the stand that they simply don't feel it's necessary to invest the time into fixing/enhancing the product to be a better tool and include a pre-runtime error checking routine. Case in point. Try: delete from bogus (Note: bogus does not exist in the database.) Regardless of your database, this should pass with flying colors durring the compile. But is picked up durring runtime. Same with an order by statement and other key statements. The system does pickup such problems with display's and other non-key statements. In any regards, it should not simply toss the information into a compressed object to be sorted out later durring the running. I would ask that those of you who agree or have seen the same problem to please call informix and have them post your concern to thier database. Perhaps they will do something about this.
