For one thing, in many programming environments your simple SQL statements can get preprocessed, massaged, broken up and rearranged in ways that can be hard to predict. I've seen some things Visual Basic dynasets can do to a simple SQL statement that would have me tearing my hair out, if I had any left. For what it's worth, on a stab at trying to duplicate it, Informix 7.14 on HPUX 10.01 did not appear to exhibit this problem as reported - but there are a lot of variables in the mix that might effect trying to reproduce it.
