Informix 10 on HPUX 11.11
Posted in 2006
A user running IDS 10 on HP-UX 11.11 found that a dbimport (into dbspaces on mirrored external storage) made the server grab all available memory and produced checkpoints lasting ~400 seconds, far worse than on an older, similar machine. Replies asked whether logging was on (it wasn't; the command was plain 'dbimport logix -d prd'), suggested forcing frequent checkpoints with a background loop of 'onmode -c', and recommended comparing ONCONFIG settings on the two servers — notably a larger buffer pool and LRU min/max settings that delay flushing dirty pages to disk. The original poster never reported back, so no confirmed resolution is recorded.

Ladies and Gentleman,
I have a situation. I tried to make a dbimport on HPUX server. The dbspaces
are located in a external storage. The HPUX server, once the dbimport has
been started, alocate all memory as it can. And the checkpoint duration is
absurd (400 seconds). The external storage have two physical disks and they
are mirrored.
Anybody?
Thanks a lot,
André Luiz

Do the dbimport without logging. What's absurd about a 400 second
checkpoint? How often are you going to do a dbimport anyway?

The dbimport process is been made without logging. I got a identical server,
but less processors. The same mirror is working very well. Hte customer
wants to chance the server because he got a processors bottleneck. We made a
lot of dbimport on the old server and, yes is is slow, but it never made a
400 checkpoint duration operation.

are you performing the import with logging on? if so, try the import
without the -l option.
can you send us the dbimport statement?

If you so desire, you can run this in the background while you are
performing your import (you are using the -n argument, right?):
while 1
do
onmode -c
sleep 30 # or whatever you wish
done
In the long-term, you might want to compare your ONCONFIG files. You may
have a larger BUFFER pool available on your "new" machine, "preventing" the
instance from writing the buffer contents to disk until the end. You also
might want to look at your LRU settings, making them smaller so that writes
to disk occur more frequently.
Take care.

Forget about the -n option ... was thinking of dbload I guess :)
The rest of the information still applies.
Take care.
