RE: Insights & trends

Its bad because what it means is that Informix is becoming a legacy system where people may see a requirement to know Informix, or someone may be moving away from Informix and migrating to another database. I just had a discussion with an SE from a company that OEMs Informix. Granted he's not in the know, but because IBM doesn't promote or market IDS, there is FUD that IDS may be going away or not being enhanced or supported. Is this true? It doesn't matter what I say, its the FUD (Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt) that exists. (SO DON'T BLAME GUMBY). I'll give you an example... Lester puts on a bunch of demos and classes about how to build a Data Warehouse using IDS in a relatively short period of time. (Weeks). So IDS can act as a DW platform. But who really cares? IBM promotes DB2 but not IDS. (I can testify to that fact when I attended a recent Big Blue SWG dog and pony show in Chicago. (Merv A. was one of the key note speaker. The other was the Product Manager for DB2). So if I'm a perspective IBM customer. Am I going to build a data warehouse using IDS, or DB2? Here's a free clue guys... If you are going to buy a product of a vendor, you go with what the vendor is recommending, you don't go with the tool that *could be used* but the tool that is being *supported* for that purpose. (I can put a bumper hitch on a Cooper Mini, but that doesn't mean I want to use it to tow a large trailer.) Or if I'm going to hit a database, I'd want to use Java, ESQL/C or some other supported access method. Sure I can use Python or Perl, but they are not really supported or intended as the heavy lifting database access language... right? I mean I can use Python, Ruby , Perl but I wouldn't bet my life on it. ;-) Also to put things in perspective... In that same time period, I could build out (hardware too) a data warehouse to handle PBs (Peta Bytes) of data using Hadoop and NoSQL tools. (And yes I have sat with several of the design teams at a client to do just that.) But I digress. When you talk to people who have been around in IT for 20 years... they all remember Informix. Vaguely. To many... Informix died when IBM bought them and Informix became irrelevant because they relegate DB2 to the mainframe. But hey! What do I know? ;-) -G Date: Fri, 22 Oct 2010 05:22:35 -0700 From: cesar_inacio_martins@yahoo.com.br Subject: Insights & trends To: informix-list@iiug.org I just want sharing some nice and cool Google tools about the users searchs and pages indexed over the world... focused in Informix/db2 What surprise-me is the increase search of "what is informix" . I think this is good and bad... good because more people is "seeing" Informix... the bad is, how they don't know what is Informix!!!?? I always think this is only here in Brazil where mostly of the developers and IT managers don't know or never hear about Informix... now I have doubt if this is for hole world. http://www.google.com/insights/search/#q=informix%2Cdb2&date=today%2012-m&cmpt=q http://www.google.com/trends?q=informix%2C+db2&ctab=0&geo=all&date=ytd&sort=0 _______________________________________________ Informix-list mailing list Informix-list@iiug.org http://www.iiug.org/mailman/listinfo/informix-list
