A user with Informix SE 7.22 on SCO UNIX wanted ODBC access from NT/95 clients (e.g. Excel) and asked which connectivity product to buy and what to enter in the ODBC DSN fields. Replies said the installed Client SDK (just its ODBC driver part) is enough, and explained the fields: the database name, the sqlhosts dbservername, the host's network name (resolvable in the hosts file), the service name/port listed in /etc/services, and protocol sesoctcp for SE (olsoctcp for OnLine), plus running sqlexecd as the listener. The poster then reported that his sesoctcp listener failed with error 25507 (unknown service name or protocol) while setlitcp worked but isn't offered in setnet32; no resolution to that follow-up is recorded in the thread.

really really simple i know...
i have a SCO unix server running Informix SE 722.uc3
and 4gl 7.20ud6
we have nt and 95 workstations that require odbc access
from simple program like MS-Excel etc.
do i need to get informix-net, informix-connect , informix client
or informix-client-sdk ?
i have informix-client-sdk installed on NT workstation and
tried simply creating a datasource in 32 bit odbc
but i am not 100% sure of what to enter
i.e. , it wants:
database
server
host
service
protocol
can anyone offer some tips
Cheers
Noel

Then you are all set.

Name of your database

The servername entry of the SE server which corresponds to the
'sesoctcp' or 'setlitcp' entry in the sqlhosts file on the server.

The net name of the server's host machine. It should be known in
WinNT/system/hosts

The service name or port number associated with the server name.

Protocol on NT is sesoctcp.

You will need an sesoctcp entry in the sqlhosts file on the server listing
the service name used above which must be in the /etc/services file. You
must also start a network listener ($INFORMIXDIR/lib/sqlexecd <service> )
on the server if it is not already running.

I didn't know i-net still existed. I don't know what Client is. You need an
ODBC driver. Connect and Client SDK will give you one, but the latest
(release 3.3) is only in SDK (release 2.30). You don't need to install the
whole SDK, just the ODBC part.

most probably 'turbo'. Check you \\windows\\system32\\drivers\\etc\\services
file. Make sure it has a line that starts with turbo (probably at the end).

olsoctcp

Art,
here is sample from my sqlhosts file on unix server
pps_se setlitcp develops pps_service
remas_se sesoctcp develops remas_service
the sesoctcp entry will not start... see error here...
--------------------------------------------------------------------
1999-10-06 11:42:01.890000 Starting Daemon INFORMIX-SQL Version 7.22.UC3
Command Line = /tools/informix/720UD6/lib/sqlexecd remas_se -l
/data/LOGDIR/remas_se.log
INFORMIXDIR = /tools/informix/720UD6
dbservername = remas_se
nettype = sesoctcp
hostname = develops
servicename = remas_service
options =
1999-10-06 11:42:01.910000 daemon err = 25507: The specified service name or
protocol is unknown.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------------------------------
the setlitcp start ok and we can connect on unix server from dbaccess for
example
the setnet32 utility only has SEIPCIP, SESOCSPX , and SESOCTCP
so SESOCTCP is available for selection on setnet32 util but will not start
on
unix server. and SETLITCP starts ok on unix server but is not available in
setnet32 util ?
any ideas
