Why the IDS Community should be hopping mad!
Posted in 2008
Not a technical problem at all: this is an opinion rant arguing that IBM under-markets and under-staffs Informix IDS (11.5) compared with DB2, with claims that few IBM SEs can support it. One reply dismisses it as repetitive whining that IBM management won't read; others reminisce about the Linux port and SAP decisions. The thread quickly drifts into off-topic 2008 US election/politics, offshoring and joke banter. No technical question, and no resolution of any kind is recorded.

Call me a nut. I don't care. I support all of the major databases except SQLServer, but I might start learning it for the hell of it. Informix wasn't my first database. Prior to Informix I dealt a bit with 4Phase, Progress, and my own proprietary database for a fetal anatomy study project done under an NSF grant when I was a senior in high school and the summer before college. But Informix caught my attention because of the elegance of its design and the attention paid to details. Sure it had some warts, but with each revision, the worst of them were removed. After Phil White left the building, the next 3 CEOs were fools. Ok PG wasn't a fool. He was a horse trader and wanted to cash out of his investment and move on to the next big deal. You have to respect that. Under IBM, Janet wanted to slowly kill IDS and relegate it to the same status as IMS, something that IBM still supports today. But the truth is that IDS is a great product. There are features in 11.5 that are still ahead of the pack and its still one of the best general purpose rdbms on the market today. But don't tell that to IBM. They don't get it. They're just willing to sell it and make money off the product while putting the least amount of skin in the game. After all, DB2 is still their flagship. (Even though it should be relegated to the AS/400 and Mainframe environments. (Hint: The tale of the numbers speak for themselves.) In fact IBM would make more money if they did move DB2 distributed out of the picture and focused on IDS ... 11.5. It has the features that if marketed will make every CEO/CIO take a double look at it. And that's all it takes to get to Column B. (Ok, so unless you understand SSM, Column B makes no sense. Talk to your IBM sales rep and ask him about column fodder.) Just think if IBM knew how to sell IDS, how much more money and market share they could capture. Ambush isn't a database guy so he wouldn't understand how or why this is possible. Nor would he be willing to spend the money to do POCs. So, call me a nut. Tell me I don't know what I'm talking about when I'm probably the only one who's dealt more with S&D than anyone here. I've also written more than $15 Million of IBM Lab services paper, more than anyone here can even come close to writing and owning. I've never bashed the IDS product. Just the incompetent lackeys who don't want to actually sell and promote the product. In truth. IBM can't sell it. Sure you have Marty in the North East, a couple of other SEs in NY, but there are only a handful of SEs in the US who know and understand IDS. C'mon Carlton, you're an SE. Go do the numbers and tell me that I'm wrong? Tell me that there are more than 3 IT Specialists in the midwest who can talk intelligently and support IDS? If you're a supporter of the product, you should be angry too. Or you can just keep sipping the blue ooze and believe that TPC benchmarks and change are "just around the corner." But hey! What do I know? -G

You have been repeating this for the past several months and bashing about it with other fine members of the IDS community and other communities (i.e. Oracle guys). There are a dozen of you who keep on wasting bandwidth. And you know what? The only people who should indeed care are not reading this (that is IBM management). So let's just move on and discuss things that we actually can change or use in our work. Or open your own group: comp.databases.informix-whiners could be a good name. Zachi

It was over 10 years ago and a lot of people have selective memory. I just loved the fact that Informix tried to keep it secret and a day before their scheduled announcement, Oracle trumps them with vaporware. I wish some would also remember the swift move by Janet to convince SAP to dump IDS ports. Too many people were crying after the fact when they should have been more proactive. BTW, rumor has it that there are people within IBM's IM management team who do read what I say. Maybe they might take action, but most likely not. Seems they have more pressing issues. I mean with the global economy sputtering at times, they have a lot of smaller battles to fight and not enough time to look at the bigger picture. ;-) But hey! What can I say? -G _________________________________________________________________ See how Windows connects the people, information, and fun that are part of your life. http://clk.atdmt.com/MRT/go/msnnkwxp1020093175mrt/direct/01/

They can't possibly have time for IDS or marketing Informix as a brand. I'd lay low till after the end of January 2009, and then revisit marketing IDS. It's not like it's going anywhere--they've already missed so many good opportunities, especially since Ambush doesn't really know anything about the database market, and he's really not into the game at all, I mean what would he possibly know coming from India, they have no real idea how Americans think anyway..... Q4 will be a time for IBM to prep their lobbyists where IBM is making the most money. -ID-

Well IBM is a US company, and all the major strategic decisons are therefore taken in the US; I guess that's what he means. As an admirer - and keen and impartial student - of America I'm sure that the whole premise of his posting - that the US is heading for a Democratic presidency - is just plain wrong anyway.

He also had a bunch of lefty policies dressed up in business-friendly rhetoric, no principles, dodgy associates, peculiar religious leanings and a shrew for a wife. I am fully aware that a) I don't have a vote, b) it's none of my business and c) you can't change people's vote. Nor would I want to. But I've seen enough of Tony Blair over the last decade to recognise him when I see him in the States with a healthy tan. We'll chat again in four years' time, I'm sure. :o) PS If Obama wins, watch what happens to your tax levels and the size of your federal government. ;o) -- Cheers, Obnoxio the Clown http://obotheclown.blogspot.com

But when they make their cross, they will still choose one of the big two or three or whatever. They won't step out of their comfort zone and look seriously at something which has never been given a chance: freeing everybody from the tyranny of the majority. Everybody seems to believe that it's up to the government to save us from the fuckups they themselves have created by letting them create more fuckups. It's like the man said, it doesn't matter who you vote for, the government still gets in. Until people rethink their relationship with government, it isn't really going to make much difference who you vote for. -- Cheers, Obnoxio the Clown http://obotheclown.blogspot.com

Even if they're the same, the 2-party system here basically forces you to vote R or D or throw your vote away. FWIW I am a big Libertarian at heart, but basically think it's all up to big govt taking big money from big corporations and the rest of us just going thru the motions not to mention that 80% of the people in this country shouldn't be allowed to vote because they really don't give a shit, and end up keeping things status quo, not unlike IBM. *<8o)

If McCain is voted in, wife and I are trying to figure out what to do, so please help me decide on which option here or other ideas... 1. Move to a US border town and help illegal aliens cross the border more safely. 2. Learn French and move to the south of France and wait tables or tend bar. 3. Move to Viet Nam and teach English and help set up new offshore work centers. 4. Move to India and teach English, and help people migrate to the US. 5. Move to China and teach English and help people migrate to the US. 6. Stay here in the US, wait tables, tend bar, shoot porn movies, and clean houses owned by offshores once owned by US Citizens. 7. Start a new church and religion here in the US, work on porn movies in spare time. ( Need to find Palin look-alikes for this ) 8. Move to New Zealand and tend sheep, work on porn movies and porn sites in spare time. 9. Work at local WalMart stocking shelves or as a cashier and brag about Informix software as the behind-the-scenes powerhouse. 10. Continue to work in IT, teach English to offshores, and recommend bad software to get even with management for reducing my wages and offshoring our jobs. Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated... -ID-
