Re: the advantages of using informix ?

A comparison of Informix and Cobol. 1. Cobol is a third generation language developed years ago by a Naval officer often referred to as Grandma Cobol. There are a variety of vendors who Cobol offerings. 2. Informix is a term that often refers to the products which are sold by the Informix company. These products include a relational database management system. Included in the Informix RDBMS is an implementation of SQL. It is possible to embed SQL (Structered Query Language) into Cobol programs. I do this with programs written in C frequently. I have not embedded SQL calls into Cobol program personally, but I know for certain it can be done. This ability to embed SQL calls in a third gen language like C or Cobol is good. Here is why. I am somewhat freed from the tedium of file handling in my C code and I am sure the same would be true in Cobol. Also, I can directly write to and read from the database with my C program. In this way I can write C programs that do whatever I can dream up that use data from the Informix database. So the comparison is a little tricky. If you mean by asking to compare Informix, if you mean compare how I use Informix and Cobol together, I'd say by embedding SQL calls in your Cobol code. If you are creating windows based clients that access data in an Informix database on a server, IMHO, there are easier ways than Cobol or C. Hope this helps.
