OnLine 5.04/070/8 Optimiser - Interesting Info/Query
Posted in 1997
A client has just reported an interesting one on SunOS and Solaris:
using the above versions, he noticed a substantial performance
degradation (sub-second to two minutes) due to unknown circumstances.
UPDATE STATISTICS and all conventional wisdom brought no benefits.
The query was a join between four tables and three views:
table A 100 000 records
B 100 000 000 records
C 300
D 25
views A 100 000
B 100 000 000
C 300
Indexes were fine, because performance was initially excellent. They
were dropped and recreated, the database was dbexported and
dbimported, all to no avail.
The non-integer numeric fields appeared to have the colmin and colmax
swapped, and the contents were way out of range.
What did eventually help was NULLing the colmin and colmax for all
non-integer numeric fields!!
They are running as a Persian LOCALE, this may be irrelevant...
This might be of use to someone out there, but does anyone have any
ideas why this happened? Sorry about the relative paucity of info.
