Raj opines: > Geez...just once, I'd like to look at informix's product offerings >and know what the hell they're talking about. Same here. I have been a strong proponent of fact-based, hyperbole-free marketing literature designed to inform rather than blather. You can help this effort more constructively by sending this message to Informix via several official channels, including the "feedback" button on the Informix web site, http://www.informix.com/informix/comments/q_a1.htm , by talking to your sales representative and asking for "plain English" material, and by amplifying your voice via your local and International User Groups, at http://www.iiug.org . Also, be sure to applaud the efforts of Christine Shannon to post the formerly internal-only plain-language descriptions of many new products. You can find them in the comp.databases.informix archives at http://www.iiug.org . > I don't suppose you have any references/URLs that lay out in plain >english what Informix sells, what versions work with what and what else I >need to purchase from Informix to get my work done. The best I've seen is available in the TechInfo center, but not without a support contract. (Just one of the benefits of having support.) See it at: http://www.informix.com/informix/services/ilink/product/product.htm >Almost makes we wish for Microsoft or Oracle. They're scum, but they're >scum with informative and useful websites. ;-) Here, I beg to differ. A cursory search of the Oracle site to see the specs of Oracle7, MS to examine the overview of SQL Server 6.5, and Informix to scrutinize the overview of Informix Dynamic Server reveals that all three of those sites are 100% buzzword compliant. I got a big chuckle out of reading these descriptions: http://www.microsoft.com/products/prodref/152_ov.htm http://www.oracle.com/products/oracle7/workgroup_server/datasheets/datasht.pdf http://www.informix.com/informix/products/ids/overview.htm Common terms include: industry-leading Informix, Oracle, (Microsoft *is* an industry!) scalable Informix, Oracle, Microsoft performance Informix, 0racle, Microsoft universal Informix, Oracle I like to ask "What is it that customers are doing that cause companies to market their products in this manner?" Perhaps it is like the promises of politicians... >========= << raj >> == http://www.brainlink.com/~frostbit/ ============== [...] BTW, why do you have that "scum" listed in your "Links I can't do without"? Thanks for your opinion, it at least makes me glad I'm not the only one to have difficulty understanding that marketing literature. Of course, though I work for Informix, I do not speak for Informix. All the usual disclaimers apply.
