Re: lots of Virtual portion memory with less used
Posted in 2006
Additional virtual memory spaces (class 'V') are allocated for two reasons: One
is if the initial segment is not configured to be large enough (sized by
SHMVIRTSIZE), the second is to provide additional virtual memory (sized by
SHMADD) to support large or complex queries or large in-memory sorts for
queries, update statistics, or index or hash table building. The first use is
normally seen as mostly used. If you are seeing several additional virtual
memory segments it is likely the latter. If you see these often, for either
reason, it would be a good thing to increase SHMVIRTSIZE to include the extra
query/sort memory into the primary virtual segment for efficiency. On most
UNIXes it takes a relatively long time to create a new segment on the fly.

An onstat -g seg gives following output. What is configured wrong or whats
going wrong on the system. Why is informix using few space in each memory
segment ?
