trigger performance impact

Can anyone tell me if there is a significant performance impact if you have 1000's of update triggers on individual columns on the tables in your database. I want to implement an audit trail function on tables that copies the before and after value at the column level to an audit table. It works well with a few hundred triggers on select tables, but I am reluctant to add more triggers for all tables before knowing the performance implications. I have read about the performance implications of stored procedures such as cache limitations. Do triggers have any similar limitations? Thanks in advance for any advice.
