I have just started on a major development with NEWERA and dont :want to have to throw it away after 2 years. Should I be considering a :different Client development tool before its too late? NewEra will at a very minimum survive the way 4GL is now surviving. I am also quite confident that Informix will keep upgrading it as they have some significant customers using it. I doubt however that it will ever become the great and fantastic tool it wast destined to in the very beginning. I have also heard raw rumors that it will be possible to write Java programs using NewEra (including the language, not JWorks which I believe is for writing programs directly in Java). I don't know exactly how it would be implemented, but possibly by compiling to Java instead of to C/C++ and run the results through a Java compiler. I also don't know how well such a thing would work. Although Informix will keep NewEra my thinking is that Java will eventually cover most type of database development too well for something like NewEra to be realy interesting in the long run. The problem is that Java isn't quite there yet for major development tasks. There have been no real time testing and ironing out of bugs yet, neither in Java itself nor in any of the tools and libraries you need. Other tools to use would either be in the league of Forte which are very expensive, or PowerBuilder, Delphi and the like where you have to use different tools for server side programming (for application partitioning or batch programs).
