How to use an 18gb drive. I assume you are on Solaris by mentioning you could use only 7 "partitions". TO use large drives you really should be looking into volume managers. LVM on AIX,HP or Solstice Disksuite/Veritas (Sun VOlume Manager) on sun. Use the volume manager to create as many volumes as you wish on your larger drives. Really if you have many large drives use the volume manager to create stripes on those drives, (of 2gb of course), which can then become informix "chunks", which can then be assembled as you wisely design into "dbspaces"...
