4GL performance questions

Years ago, I worked for a company that wrote rather large systems for small retail shops, with 4-6 users tops on a system at a time. They wrote them in Informix-4GL, and I always felt that the performance was barely adequate. I'm now in a situation where I am involved at evaluating some order administration packages, and one of the leading contenders has written their package in Informix-4GL. They don't have many customers as of yet, and none of the current installations is very large, so I can't tell what the performance is like at an installation handling 50+ users. What I'd like to know is how people out there feel about Informix-4GL in terms of raw performance and performance degradation based on the number of users. I'd be especially interested in hearing from people who have designed and built large systems in 4GL, and how they feel about these issues. Let's save some bandwith here; e-mail me your views, and I'll summarize when the responses slow down.
