I prefer Postgres, but you could also check out the new free Oracle release. It does have limitations: 4GB of user data, use up to 1GB of memory, and use one CPU on the host machine. http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/xe/index.html MySQL has a large development community but Postgres is gaining ground.
