ipload core dumps
Posted in 2009
Tom reported that ipload (IDS 11.5.FC3 on AIX 6.1, displaying to Xming on Windows XP) opened an empty X window and core dumped, while other X clients like xclock worked fine. Fernando Nunes suggested changing the PC's display colour depth; switching Windows from 32-bit to 16-bit colour made ipload work. The cause appears to relate to ipload's use of 8-bit pseudo-colour bitmaps and how the X server maps colour depths, but Fernando couldn't explain it precisely. Tom had a PMR open with IBM; no official fix is recorded in the thread.

Topics: Platform-Specific Issues
Hello all,
As soon as I execute ipload or ipload -n the program fails with a core
dump. The IDS is 11.5.FC3, the platform is AIX 6.1, the c compiler is
AIX Xlc for AIX, the X server on my Windows XP SP2 PC is xming
6.9.0.31.
I can run xclock and all of the standard pre-packaged X software that
comes with AIX.
The first time I ran ipload, the onpload database was created, the
xwindow on my PC did open but was empty, and a core file was dumped in
the current directory. I tried this as root and user informix with
identical results. If I run ipload, the X window will open and ipload
will stay active until I terminate it. If I run ipload -n the entire
core dumps and ipload terminates on it's on.
Any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Tom

Put your Windows in 8bit color mode (256) colors.
If this works I'll try to explain... ;)

Fernando,
I only have two choices, 32 bit and 16 bit. It was set to 32 bit, I
changed it to 16 bit, and now it works.
All of my other X-stuff has been working just fine. If you try to
explain, I'll try to understand :)
Thanks,
Tom

oh boy.... Well... I'm glad it worked... I have to search a bit to try to
explain it. I've been through that... ipload uses some 8 (maybe 16 according to
your experience) bit functons/bitmap (for the initial pretty image). Some
X-Servers can map that to whatever they're using. Others are configurable.
Others have other weird behaviors which in turn causes "confusion" in the
ipload code...
I'll keep this post as unread. Will get back when I found further info.
Regards.

Well. Honestly I can't explain the details. I don't even recall how I found the
workaround. The feature of the X-Windows servers I was talking about is "8 bit
Pseudo Color".
Some of them have a configuration option for that, others deal with it without
any issues, Cygwin can support it in "-fullscreen" etc.
I should have opened a PMR at the time, so that further investigation was done
(I'm not sure if this can be considered a bug in ipload... maybe it's just a
limitation and requires only some documentation). I recently used it in HP-UX
and had no problems. When I hit this I was using AIX. So probably the OS has
something to do with it. I could only find a bug (already fixed) in Solaris
with similar symptoms.
If/when I have time I can try to look into this. You could also open a PMR of
course.
Regards.

Fernando,
Thank you for the info. The explanation is excellent. I do have a PMR
open, IBM Informix has the core file that that gets created.
I will add your post to the PMR info. The Informix tech at this time
wants to open a PMR with the IBM AIX group. At any rate, I'll do what
I can to keep this open.
Thanks again,
Tom
