CHAR vs NCHAR problem

I created a table in INformix 7.2 on Solaris V 4.0, specifying CHAR & VARCHAR as the datatypes. However, it created the table using NCHAR & NVARCHAR datatypes. Does anyone know why this is and how to prevent it?? Thanks in advance Miles Palmer MCIWorldcom
