Number of CPU's

I need to justify the purchase of a 4 CPU database server over a 2 CPU database server. This server will be used for about 100 concurrent users and the databases on it will be extensively DSS databases. Any good justifications ? Typically, the overhead of enabling the multiprocessor code in Informix is more than the benefit you receive when you have only 2 physical processors. If you have 4 processors, however, you can use the multiprocessor code and know fer sure that its worth it. Also, I myself went from a 2-processor HP J200 box to a 4 processor HP K260 box, and I now have a VERY happy database (and users). The performance is not twice as fast, but in some cases 4 or 5 times as fast. Now whether this is due more to the new RAID array, or the additional memory...I don't know. But I look down sometimes and see all 4 processors getting beat on............. You definitely want the 4 processors for DSS-heavy stuff. Buy me 4 processors or I'll sulk. <agrantha@my-deja.com> wrote in message news:7qlu3f$f6k$1@nnrp1.deja.com... > I need to justify the purchase of a 4 CPU database server over a > 2 CPU database server. You need to analyse the performance of your application, and see where the bottlenecks in performance, if any, are. There's little point in spending money on extra CPUs if your cpuvs are not constantly queued up, and UNIX is not CPU bound. You could save the money and buy memory instead, if the system is memory bound.
