Unable to read system catalog (systables)

I was testing a program when I had the need to restore my previous environment, namely my database, from a tape backup. The first time I restored, things were fine. I ran my tests again. I restored, again. This time, however, I got the "Unable to read system catalog..." message. I figured maybe I got a bad restore. So, again, I restored. Same problem. I've check and open the permissions, verified informix ownership and membership of the database directory and the files therein, and ran bcheck on the systables files (which came back clean, by the way). I'm running Informix-SQL 4.10.UE1 on an SCO Open Server Enterprise 3.0 box. I would appreciate any ideas.
